Club is lifting the bar
WEIGHTLIFTING: Weights were lifted, records were broken but most importantly, the Whitsunday Weightlifting Club's performances on Saturday at the Australian Club Championships' qualifying round were good enough to see them ranked in Queensland.
Club members attended CrossFit 4802 on Saturday and the team of Leanne Knox, Matt Warren, Gabbi McNeill and Corey Smith finished second in the state, well on their way to qualifying for finals in Brisbane later this year.
"With that result we've got a very good chance of getting into the top eight in Australia," Whitsunday Weightlifting Club coach Leanne Knox said.
"Ninety per cent of our lifters got personal bests, which is great."
Leanne herself was again in the thick of the action, producing a new Australian masters' (40-44 years) record in the 69kg division.
The national representative broke the old clean and jerk record by a staggering 8kg, raising the bar to 91kg.
She wasn't done there, improving the snatch record to 157kg from the old 151kg.
The under-15s also broke plenty of records on the day, led by Emily Hinschen who improved her snatch and clean and jerk PBs to new Australian records.
Emily lifted 15kg (snatch) and 20kg (clean and jerk) in the 32kg division.
Emily Poles also produced an Australian record, lifting 21kg (snatch) and 26kg (clean and jerk) on Saturday.
Lilly Poles and Leah Hannant posted PBs respectively, with Lilly lifting 27kg (snatch) and 31kg (clean and jerk).
Leah produced a snatch lift of 27kg and a clean and jerk effort of 35kg.
Youth lifter Corey Smith improved his snatch PB to 72kg, while junior Matt Warren advanced his snatch and clean and jerk titles to 101kg and 125kg respectively.
In the senior division, Gabbi McNeill's clean and jerk of 87kg earned her a new PB, while Chayse Leith recorded 70kg (snatch) and 95kg (clean and jerk) efforts.
Coach Leanne Knox also acknowledged first-time competitors Lauren Teys and Jenna Kljaic, who both performed admirably on debut.
The club contests the second round of the JME Club Challenge this weekend in Mackay.
