Co-sleeping causes mum to lose both her children

A MOTHER of two young boys who continued to co-sleep with them, despite repeated warnings from professionals has lost her children after a court ruled she was placing them in danger.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was first warned about co-sleeping when her eldest was just a baby.

But after fears from social workers, the two boys, who are both under four, have now been placed for adoption following the court proceedings.

The judge said the mother ignored repeated warnings

Judge Peter Greene said the mother of the two little boys had failed to act on "professionals' advice" against the practice of "co-sleeping" The Telegraph reports.

The mother, from Cambridgeshire in the UK first came to the authority's attention after bruising was noticed on the younger when he was months old.

The court heard that one of the boys had been unintentionally injured by his father's use of "excessive force" and the other toddler hurt as a result of the "rough, abrupt manner" in which he was handled by his mother.

The mother felt that only she knew best

But judge Greene said in his ruling that evidence showed that the couple "loved their children and would not deliberately hurt them"

However, he criticised the children's mother's attitude that she "always thinks that she knows best".

The judge said she was dismissive of professionals and the court heard evidence from social workers that the mother was "continually ignoring their advice against having him in bed with her" and rejecting advice about feeding.

The Telegraph reports the court ruled that there was adequate concern for the children's safety if they continue to co-sleep and as such adoption was the only realistic option.

80% of parents co-sleep, despite warnings following tragic deaths

While experts caution parents not to co-sleep, studies show more than 80% of parents do. In the US a mother was recently charged with manslaughter after the death of her 18-day old baby while co-sleeping.

Tragically, another of her children died in 2009 while co-sleeping.

The sheriff in the arrest of Erin Piche-Pitts, 25, called the newborn's death "horrific negligence."

"I've seen these cases before," Sheriff Grady Judd told Fox 13 "The first one is a horrible, tragic event in life. The second is a horrible, tragic loss of life of an infant, but she was irresponsible, and as a result, she's got two dead babies. It's time for her to go to prison."
