Coaches a boost for weightlifting club

THE Whitsunday Weightlifting Club is set to be strengthened by the addition of four more coaches this year.

Members Steve Knox, Cait Halsey, Tony Lisciandro and Nathan Sainsbury are all set to become Australian Weightlifting Federation level 1 coaches, which will help the local club continue growing following a stellar 2014.

Lisciandro and Steve Knox will travel to Cairns this weekend to complete the club weightlifting/sports power coach 1 licence course, while Hasley and Sainsbury will gain their accreditation in Brisbane in April.

The Whitsunday Weightlifting Club received more than $7000 in funding from the Queensland Government's 'Get Going' grants, which coach Leanne Knox says will help lifters improve.

"It'll be huge. We can't grow our club without coaches and at the moment I'm the only coach," she said." I don't have anymore time to put into coaching but once we get these coaches through we'll be able to have more classes, which is good because we've got some more members coming on board this year.

"This will allow us to cater people to individual needs with more coaches and streamline our classes to have beginners, intermediate and advanced sessions rather than everyone all together."
