METRES from where Cole Miller was attacked just over a year ago, his sister Kate delivered a touching tribute.

On January 3, 2016 Cole Miller was celebrating the birthday of his water polo team captain Ellodie Ruffin in Fortitude Valley.

But at about 3.30am Armstrong Renata attacked Cole, leaving him unconscious.

Two days later Cole died in hospital.

Cole grew up on the Sunshine Coast before the family relocated to the inner Brisbane suburb of West End.

At a memorial on Friday, Cole's sister Kate said her brother's love stayed with her whole family.

"My baby brother Cole taught me the meaning of unconditional love," said.

"The warmth, innocence and love Cole brought to my life will forever stay with me.

"As we move forward and remember Cole, I will always have that love.

"So from Billy, Mitchell, myself and my parents: Cole Miller, we will forever shine for you."

An emotional Ms Ruffin said she had lost a friend, a teammate and a brother when Cole died.

Mr Ruffin said she was touched to see so many people wearing green - the colour of their water polo team, the Brisbane Barracudas.

"Green love lit our city up and so did the message that we stand against this cowardly violence that took our teammate from us too soon," she said.

The Barracudas will play their first game tonight in a round named in Cole's honour.

Renata has pleaded guilty to unlawful striking causing death but is yet to be sentenced. Daniel Jermaine Lee Maxwell has been committed to stand trial for unlawful striking causing death.
