Coleborn still sunny in Hawaii
MAROOCHYDORE'S Mitch Coleborn could not topple Hawaiian surfing icon Sunny Garcua, but his second place in a round-two heat at Sunset Beach was enough to propel him into round three of the Vans World Cup of Surfing.
After an eye-catching and victorious display in four-metre surf during round one of the $250,000 ASP Prime event, Coleborn tallied a second-round score of 10 (out of a possible 20) yesterday to finish behind Garcia (13.93) but ahead of women's world champion Carissa Moore (7.83) and Alain Riou (5.60).
He will be joined in round three by Coolum Beach's Julian Wilson.
Wilson was afforded automatic entry into the latter stages of the competition because of his world ranking, six.
Lincoln Taylor, from Stradbroke Island, also won his heat.
