Community bank a step closer

PLANS are continuing to establish a Community Bank in the Whitsundays and this could happen as early as next year.

A total of 300 pledges are needed to establish a bank and about 150 have been received so far.

The steering committee is on the hunt to secure more pledges from the community to ensure that they can finalise the pledge stage before Christmas.

The Whitsundays Community Bank is one of the fasting developing community bank initiatives in Queensland.

The committee has been busy in recent months attending shows and meetings, manning stands at shopping centres and walking the streets to raise awareness of the project.

Committee chairman Jeff Law said that to be over half way in such a short time showed the need and enthusiasm for a community bank.

“We have been really happy with the support to date but need to now ensure that we reach the 300 mark so that we can move to the next phase in the process and ultimately open a community bank,” he said.

He said community banks were making a real difference to the lives of local people by sustaining the local economy, creating employment opportunities and re-investing in the community.

“Taking ownership in this public company, in the way of shares, will lead to continual community benefits at no cost to the banks customers,” he said.

The community bank volunteers will continue to be out and about seeking pledges and answering questions in the next few weeks.
