Community bank to open

WHITSUNDAY residents look set to gain a community bank, with the capital now raised to open a branch in Cannonvale early this year.

Chair of Whitsunday Community Enterprises, Jeffrey Law, said the $626,000 target needed to comply with ASIC had been exceeded.

Mr Law described this as a momentous achievement in the current economic climate and said he would like to thank everyone who had become a shareholder and played a part in making this dream a reality.

"We went from being $100,000 short (of the minimum needed) at the beginning December, to selling the maximum number of shares we had," Mr Law said.

"The people of the Whitsundays (obviously) have faith in the community bank model; their community and Bendigo Bank contributing to a sustainable community," he said. "The committee are enthusiastically looking forward to now working towards the opening of our bank branch."

The new branch will be located at Centro with an agency also operating from Proserpine. Mr Law said the ultimate goal was for Proserpine's agency to become a full branch at some point over the next two to three years.

"In the new year we will have a grand opening (at Cannonvale) and will be hiring local staff," he said.
