Community forums for ‘ice’ issue
A 'DISTURBING' letter from Whitsunday Regional Council mayor Jennifer Whitney has prompted Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen to organise round table discussions in Mackay and Bowen about the methylamphetamine or 'ice' issues in his electorate.
"Mayor Whitney told me that Bowen State High School had raised some concerns with her about what they described as 'an astounding and gravely concerning increase in the use of drugs, particularly ice'," Mr Christensen said.
"The reports that the school had obtained insinuated that drugs were being given freely, at no cost to the user, and were used among a wide range of community members, including students."
A Department of Education and Training representative said there had been no reports of ice possession at Bowen State High school.
But Mr Christensen said last week's drug raids across Mackay and the Whitsundays, which resulted in the seizure of more than $1 million in drugs and the arrest of more than 60 people, indicated the severity of the problem facing the electorate.
The drug haul included 14kg of cannabis, 18 cannabis plants and more than 460g of ice.
Community forums will be held in Mackay on June 12 and Bowen on June 13.
The forums are by invitation only but Mr Christensen said he was casting a wide net for invitations.
"If you are part of a group that feels it should be included in the forum or if your family has been touched by the scourge of ice and you want to tell your story to the forum, then please contact my office on 07 4944 0662," he said.
