Competition for Costigan
CURRENT Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan has nominated to stand for the Liberal National Party (LNP) in contesting the seat of Whitsunday at the State Government election of 2015 - but he is not alone.
The Whitsunday Times understands ABC Tropical Queensland radio presenter Meecham Philpott and Canegrowers Mackay CEO Kerry Latter have also nominated.
Nominations for pre-selection closed off on Friday, when Mr Costigan proudly posted that he had 're-applied' on his Facebook page.
"Nominated today to once again represent the LNP in Whitsunday... this time for the 2015 State election. Thanks to everyone who's continued to encourage me, including people from outside our traditional supporter base. In 2012, we won Whitsunday after a 26-year drought, so no complacency at this end," Mr Costigan's Facebook post said.
Meanwhile, neither Mr Philpott, nor Mr Latter are free to comment on their nominations due to compliance with party rules.
LNP State Director, Brad Henderson, was also reasonably tight-lipped.
"The LNP is still in the process of confirming candidates for the state seat of Whitsunday and, as per party protocol, does not reveal names until that process is complete," Mr Henderson said.
However, he did reveal that "if more than one candidate is seeking pre-selection, they will be given the opportunity to address local LNP members who will then vote for their preferred candidate to contest the seat".
The Whitsunday Times understands there are about 50 members of the combined Proserpine/Whitsunday Coast LNP branch.
A pre-selection meeting would be held either in Proserpine or Mackay and members of 12 months or more would be eligible to vote.
