Construction underway at Cannonvale

CONSTRUCTION has officially started on the $6 million Junior Learning Centre at Cannonvale State School to be opened in 2017.

Education Minister Kate Jones said the two-storey complex paid for by the Palaszczuk Government would be a welcome addition to the fast growing school which had enrolled more than 680 students in Prep to Year 6 this year.

"The new building design has been developed in consultation with the school and the Parents and Citizens' Association to ensure the best educational outcomes and value for money," Ms Jones said.

"The centre is part of stage one of the school's new Master Plan that was well received by the school and community in August last year."

Principal Ms Angie Kelly said the new learning centre would include a Prep precinct that would bring the whole school together for the first time.

"This is exceptionally exciting news for Cannonvale and for the school which is growing at a rapid rate," Ms Kelly said.

"This project is the beginning of the brand new look for the school, based on its Master Plan."

Ms Kelly said the design was beautiful and the facilities would be state-of-the-art.

"The planning for the new centre has been a year-long process and we are all looking forward to starting 2017 in the new Junior Learning Centre," she said.

Cannonvale State School relocated to its current Coral Esplanade site from Cannon Valley in 1969.

Celebrating 106 years in 2016, Cannonvale State School caters for students from the Whitsunday Islands, Shute Harbour, Airlie Beach, Riordanvale and other local farming communities.
