Contracts to be signed for upgrade

CONTRACTS for the Airlie main street upgrade between Whitsunday Regional Council and the company awarded the tender, Probuild Civil, will be signed today.

Council's director of transport and infrastructure Gary Martin said this was a positive step in the delivery of the project.

"This project will commence fully in January 2012, with the objective of having all hard engineering works completed by mid-December 2012.

Following on from that point we expect there will be some minor cosmetic works such as completion of landscaping that will continue on until March 2013," he said. Mr Martin said just two aspects of the upgrade had yet to be finalised from a design perspective, these being the treatment of Airlie Crescent and the business surrounding the proposed land "exchange".

"The contract has been structured in such a way to allow for any variations stemming from those two elements of the project," Mr Martin said.

The Airlie main street office at 267 Shute Harbour Road will be open over the Christmas period, excluding public holidays.

If the shop is unmanned, community liaison officer John Powell can be reached by phone on 0412 966 727.
