Convicted murderers lose appeal

FOUR Queenslanders have lost their appeals against life sentences for the murder of a man trying to protect his teenage sons.

In October last year Michael Crothers, 49, Colin Robert Rogers, 49, David Robert Heathcote, 25, and his mother Yvonne Jean Heathcote, 43, were found guilty of murdering 38-year-old John Frank Hoghes at his property at Tara, west of Toowoomba.

Today in an 83-page judgment the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeals, saying the trial judge's summing up to the jury was "very fair".

Crothers, Rogers and father-of-three David Heathcote will be eligible for parole in 2022.

Mother-of-eight Yvonne Heathcote will be eligible for parole in 2024.
