Coronial inquest into Sydney siege now open

A CORONIAL inquest into the deaths Katrina Dawson, Tori Johnson and Martin Place siege gunman Man Haron Monis will begin in Sydney this morning.

Barrister and mother-of-three Katrina Dawson and cafe manager Tori Johnson both died in the siege along with the gunman, who held 18 people hostage in the Martin Place cafe for more than 16 hours last month.

No witnesses will be called at today's hearing, but what issues will be discussed when it reconvenes later in the year are expected to be outlined.

The inquest aims to determine how the three deaths occurred, what factors contributed to them and whether they could have been prevented.

It follows media reports Ms Dawson died after being shot by a stray police bullet after officers stormed the building.
NSW State Coroner Michael Barnes will preside over the hearing.
