Costo presents flags to PSHS
ABORIGINAL and Torres Strait Islander flags will now fly atop flag poles at the front of Proserpine State High School.
Member for Whitsunday Jason Costigan presented the flags to student leaders at the school on Monday morning after a request from the school.
"We normally present the Queensland flag, the Aboriginal flag and the Torres Strait flag.
"Today it's the two indigenous flags in recognition of our first Australians,” he said.
"When we say we pay our respects to the Gia and Ngaro people, we mean that, and it's important we recognise our first Australians and the presentation of these flags is one way of doing that.
"I was up in the Territory recently doing my shadow work and their world up there is far removed from our world down here, but they are Australian like we are here ... and that connection to country is strong.”
Mr Costigan said community education officer Arthur Gabey had a strong presence at the school and he played a vital role.
"There is plenty of hidden gems at PSHS, whether it's academically, sporting-wise or culturally,” Mr Costigan said.
