COUNCIL AGENDA

WHITSUNDAY Regional Council's full meeting agendas will once again be available online, although councillors remain divided as to whether this should be the case.

At last week's meeting in Proserpine, Cr John Atkinson moved a motion that Council's full agenda and its attachments be available to the public on the Monday mornings prior to each meeting, with the exception of the confidential section.

Deputy mayor Andrew Willcox supported the motion, stating in his belief the public was entitled to read the agenda.

"I moved the same motion before and unfortunately it wasn't carried," he said.

"I believe the public is entitled to this information so I urge all the councillors to support this motion in the interest of being transparent."

Mayor Jennifer Whitney and Cr Jan Clifford were the only two councillors who did not support the motion.

"Councillor Clifford and myself have been attending courses in relation to a diploma in local government, and one of the things that was discussed was the fact of how other local governments put their agendas out," Cr Whitney said.

"Due to the lack of confidentiality within the council and the agendas getting out into the papers and basically having pre-determined write-ups, we felt this was a way to protect the Council from that - by putting out - which is lawful to do - (only) the frame of what the actual agenda is."

Cr Whitney said since Council started limiting the agenda information posted online she believed "we have had better press - because they haven't pre-empted all of the write-ups and the angst with what the Council is doing".

"But I'm happy to accept this motion," she said. The motion was carried by five votes to two, with a division recorded.
