Council considers Prossie plan
A STRATEGY for the Proserpine master plan has been put forward by Whitsunday region mayor Andrew Willcox.
Cr Willcox put the plan forward at last week's council meeting. No document exists yet, but Cr Willcox said there were "a lot of really good ideas out there (and) we need to get a plan for the whole set-up”.
"For example, Proserpine is not tapping into the grey nomad market. We have all these caravans coming up from down south and they are driving straight past,” he said.
However, there was no discussion of the proposed Taylor St driver reviver site which was presented as a possible location by the Proserpine Chamber of Commerce last month.
"If we were going to choose the Taylor St site we would make sure the community was on board with it,” Cr Willcox said. "The houses across the road have not been notified or asked their opinion and there is no actual access to the site.”
Cr Willcox indicated tapping into the grey nomad market and changing the bad reputation Proserpine had in regard to parking and shop access among the older travelling community was a priority. "We have to work out parking for those guys and also at the hospital,” he said. "We have a great hospital but there is parking issues with that as well and have a look at that.”
Cr Willcox brought to the meeting a strategy to undertake a comprehensive Proserpine Sustainability and Future Growth Master Plan of the Proserpine township area.
Deputy mayor and Division 3 councillor John Collins said he was excited about the plan and the motion was passed unanimously.
"You can catch the biggest barramundi at the Peter Faust Dam and the good thing about that is people have to drive through Proserpine to get to it,” Cr Willcox said.
Cr Willcox said negotiations with SunWater had been entered into.
No time frame for completion of the plan was offered by the council.
