Council to consult on backpacker overcrowding

MIKE Brunker wants to ensure circumstances surrounding the tragic backpacker fire in Childers that killed 15 people cannot also occur in the Whitsundays.

The Division 6 councillor raised the matter of overcrowding in the region's hostel accommodation at the Whitsunday Regional Council meeting in Bowen today.

Mayor Andrew Willcox acknowledged a problem existed and said he had convened a meeting with all the necessary stakeholders to nut out a solution.

Representatives of the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service, Queensland Police Service, local laws experts, the Department of Immigration, the Australian Taxation Office and a national backpacker body have been called upon to attend the meeting.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday August 30 in Bowen.

"The public needs to understand our local laws only have a certain amount of power. We are fully aware of the problem and are doing everything we can to alleviate it," Cr Willcox said.

"Council has got quite a few irons in the fire and there is action going on quite a few fronts."

Cr Brunker said every year council received complaints about backpacker overcrowding.

But the problem council faced was inability to investigate or enforce breaches of the law.

He suggested residents report directly to the enforcement body, the QFES.
