Council to increase security patrols on market grounds

SECURITY patrols in the car park beside the Airlie beach markets will soon be increased thanks to a motion passed at today's Whitsunday Regional Council meeting.

Prior to the meeting, Councillor Jan Clifford was tagged in a Facebook post ranting about the behaviour of backpackers at the site of the weekly Lions Community Market.

On the Whitsunday Chat site Cr Clifford said " I am continually being complained to about "bad backpackers"  (and) as a matter of course illegal camping is reported to local laws and security".

At today's council meeting in Proserpine, Cr Clifford held up a picture on her phone depicting a power box that had been broken into at the market site.

"This has become a very hot topic over the weekend and I really think we need to do something. Ratepayers should not be subsidising holidays for young people," she said.

Cr Clifford put forward a motion to increase security patrols in the grounds of the community market, which was passed unanimously.
