Couple teach you to ‘mine my way’ in new career book

WHEN Russell and Tracey Brauer decided they wanted a career change, they were determined to make it happen.

But there was one problem. They had no experience in the field they wanted - mining.

At the time, Mr Brauer said the talk of the town was the "mining boom" and the number of jobs available so he and his wife decided to take a risk and relocated from the Whitsundays to Western Australia in 2011.

After a lengthy application process, Mr and Mrs Brauer spent the next three years working on eight different mine sites.

The couple were bombarded with questions from their friends and family asking how they managed to land a mining job with no experience and it was then that Mr Brauer decided to write a book about their journey.

"There's about 30 chapters and it goes through everything that you, as a complete beginner, need to know," Mr Brauer said.

Two years later, their book, Mining My Way is now published and anyone can read their handy tips and tricks on how to get into the mining industry with little to no experience.

The book features chapters on women in mining, surviving the interview, where to start in the gold fields, couples in mining and more.

Mr Brauer said it "felt good" to be able to say they had published a book.

"I just wanted to do it so we did it," he said.

"Now it's published, I'm certainly proud but more proud because everyone reading it is saying it's the product I was supposed to produce."
