Cowboys Tamou to miss Origin II after caught drink driving

UPDATE: Some long-weekend celebratory drinks have ended in a nightmare far worse than any hangover for Cowboys prop James Tamou.

The Blues front-rower was caught behind the wheel, almost four times over the limit, in the Townsville suburb of North Ward about 3.30am on Monday.

And the NRL and his club have cracked down hard - he will miss game two of the Origin series for the Blues in Brisbane on June 26.

He has also been stood down from the north Queensland club's clash against St George Illawarra at WIN Stadium on Friday night.

On top of those bans, he has copped a hefty $20,000 fine from his club, and missing the representative fixture means he will miss out on a $30,000 match payment.

Tamou was charged with high-range drink-driving and unlicensed driving.

"These penalties have been reached after consultation between the club and the NRL integrity unit which was established to ensure matters like this are treated appropriately across the game," Cowboys CEO Peter Jourdain said.

Scott Bolton has been promoted to the starting pack as Tamou's replacement for the clash against the Dragons, with Gavin Cooper added to the travelling squad.

James Tamou charged with drink driving

COWBOYS and NSW Origin star James Tamou has been charged with drink-driving.

The prop was pulled over by police in Townsville recently.

The club released a statement yesterday which said Tamou admitted that he had several drinks earlier in the night on the day he was stopped and he would not contest the charge.

"The Cowboys are extremely disappointed, as is James, in these events," Cowboys chief executive Peter Jourdain said.

"James is taking responsibility for his actions and is very remorseful that he has put himself in this position.

"This is his first offence. He knows it is a serious one and that he will have to pay a penalty."

The matter will be heard in the Townsville Magistrates Court at a later date.
