Cowboys fight to down brave Sharks

THE boot of Johnathan Thurston proved the difference as he nailed a field goal in extra time as the Cowboys secured a 20-19 victory against the Sharks in Townsville last night.

An earlier Thurston field goal looked to have sealed victory but the lowly Sharks showed their teeth as they fought back with a try and a field goal of their own to tie up the game 19-19 and take play into extra time.

The win cements North Queensland's spot in the top eight as they now eye off a top four spot with a game to go.

The Cowboys were tipped to win easily at home but Cronulla had other ideas as they went to the break at 12-12.

Cowboys 20 (Taumalolo 2, Thurston tries; Thurston 3 goals; Thurston 2 field goals) defeated Sharks 19 (Feki 2, Politoni tries; Gordon 3 goals; Holdsworth field goal) at 1300SMILES Stadium. Crowd: 11,712
