Crab catches up in the river
The weather played havoc with anglers this week, with local fishing guru Bob Spees labelling it "not much good at all".
"But we've got good tides coming this weekend and favourable weather," he said.
Around the islands, there have been sightings of tuna schools in the Whitsunday Passage.
Mr Spees also recommended targeting the shoals for red emperor, nannygai and Spanish mackerel with the good tides.
"Try places like Dolphin Point, Mackerel Bay, Edward Island and Nara Inlet on a run out tide," he said.
The fringing reefs have seen some nice grassy sweetlip this week.
"And some small mackerel," Mr Spees said.
"But that can change with these better tides."
Mr Spees recommended using the lightest sinker possible.
Those heading out after dark should try the deep holes of South Molle Island and in Whitsunday Passage.
"If they can get fresh or live squid for jewfish," Mr Spees said.
In Shute Harbour, the jetty has been producing queenfish and mackerel.
"And the squid should came back at night after we get past the full moon," Mr Spees said.
The rockwalls have seen some nice catches of grunter this week.
"They're also getting some nice fingermark on live herring," Mr Spees said.
Those heading to the river this week are advised to bring their crab pots with strong catches reported.
"The river also hasn't been fishing too bad for grunter off the rock bars," Mr Spees said.
"And with these better tides the salmon and barra should be on the bite."
The dam suffered under last week's weather, however a few barramundi were still landed using soft plastics up in the weed beds and the creek mouths.
"The best time to target them is early morning as the sun hits the water," Mr Spees said.
"They're still getting the odd barra in the main basin trolling deep divers that go seven metres plus."
The beaches have been producing this week as well, Mr Spees said.
"Up around Wilsons and Conway they've been getting some nice whiting," he said.
"And Cannonvale Beach has been getting some nice whiting on a run in tide."
With last week's weather proving a hindrance, Mr Spees said anglers should hope for clearer skies.
