Man dies in fire as brave neighbour saves partner

 

A COURAGEOUS neighbour has saved a Brisbane woman from a house fire, but couldn't reach her partner who perished in the blaze.

The neighbour suffered burns to his face and arms when he raced to the couple's aid.

He rescued a 71-year-old woman from the Acacia Ridge home about 10pm on Thursday.

He returned for a 72-year-old man but was beaten back.

The neighbour, 56, and the woman were both taken to hospital in a stable condition. The man has been treated for his burns, and the woman for respiratory issues.

"He continued to try and extinguish the fire and rescue the other occupant of the house. In doing so, he has sustained some minor burns," a QFES spokesman said

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire. but a Queensland Police spokesperson said the fire was not being treated as suspicious.

Firefighters were called to the two-storey property on Forbes Street at 1.50am after a fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said the fire spread through the top storey of the home by the time crews arrived.

The family were safely evacuated from the house and crews extinguished the fire at 4.15am.
