Croc sightings reported in the Whitsundays

THE Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (EHP) has received a number of unconfirmed reports of crocodile sightings at Airlie Beach, Shute Harbour and Sarina, since the start of the year.

The only confirmed sighting was at Long Island last month.

EHP investigated the island sighting and installed crocodile warning signs.

An EHP spokesman urged residents to be 'croc wise', which includes obeying crocodile warning signs, preventing domestic pets from swimming in waters where crocs may live and standing back from the water when fishing or casting nets

"Never provoke, harass or feed crocs," he said.

"Never leave food, fish scraps or bait near the water, a camp site or boat ramp, and always supervise children."

The spokesman also reminded residents of the importance of reporting crocodile sightings.

"Do not approach the crocodile under any circumstances," he said.

"Report the sighting as soon as possible to EHP on 1300 130 372 so it can be investigated."

EHP investigated more than 50 confirmed crocodile sightings and more than 220 unconfirmed crocodile sightings in 2013.
