IPSWICH BMX Club president Lee Smith is fuming after thieves took off with thousands of dollars worth of vital competition equipment.

Mr Smith is hoping that the unique nature of the air compressor and automatic starting system that was taken sometime Monday night will help police or members of the public track down the crooks.

"Basically we can't ride without it," Mr Smith said.

"We might be able to borrow a system from Beenleigh, but to replace it ourselves will be 7-8 grand for the gate and another $3000-4000 for the compressor."

The equipment was stored beneath the announcer's tower at the BMX club at Willey St Park, Ipswich.

Mr Smith said the thieves ripped up the timber cover on the box containing the expensive equipment.

"It's not light," he said.

"The compressor and gate weigh about 50kg each, so it was probably more than one person and probably adults involved.

"It's a unique system and I hope someone recognises it somewhere or hears someone bragging about it."

The club's next local race meeting was scheduled for Friday, but looks like it will be postponed.

"We'll be out of pocket $1000 for every time we cannot race," Mr Smith said.

The club has insurance on the theft, but is hoping the equipment is returned so that it does not have to go through the process of making the claim.
