Cross country puts students to the test

THE Whitsunday Christian College's senior students were put through their paces last Thursday.

The school held its senior cross country last week, with Matthew Scholz and Samantha Topp leading the way for those aged 17 and older.

Matthew blitzed the course to finish in just 19.34 minutes, a mere seven seconds ahead of runner-up Deon Ball (19.41).

Matthew Henning crossed the line third in the eldest division, while Xin Yan Dunlop and Dayna Marshall trailed Samantha for line honours.

Jake Brown and Fia Fitzgerald were comfortable winners in the respective 16 boys and girls fields, with the latter racing home in an astonishing 13.29 - nearly five minutes clear of Kavita Supramaniam in second.

Ivan Van Zyl edged Harrison Palm for silver in the 16 boys division, clocking 17.24.

Michael Maltby (10.53) won a fast-paced 15 boys division, with Alex Thompson (12.22) and Jack Henderson (13.32) also posting swift times.

Grace Booker was fastest of the 15 girls, beating Amelia Lammens and Tayla Stevenson with a time of 16.45.

Just four seconds separated the first three 14-year-old boys; however it was Matthew Hansen who was ultimately crowned the champion with a time of 16.20.

Eve McCann dominated the 14 girls field to produce a startling time of 15.55, ahead of Brooke Evans and Ashleigh Heaslip.

Brodie Toms (12.15) and Jamie Allen (15.07) were victorious in the respective 13-year events, with the girls providing another close finish.

Jamie edged out Aochi Dibbin (15.48) and Julia Towle (15.50) to stand atop the podium.

Mitchell Walsh clocked a strong 11.38 in the 12 boys to beat Ethan Thompson and Tane Pini while Madison Richardson (17.44) snuck past Kiera Hansen by just two seconds.
