Cruise draws big crowd in second year

THE second annual Cruisin' Whitsunday has shone in its second year, drawing big crowds to the Airlie Beach foreshore this morning.

Whitsunday Cruisin' Car Club president Chris Coyte said they had seen "a constant flow of people to spectate all day".

"Everyone loves it," he said.

"We had a couple of New Zealanders come through before.

"They do a similar event in one of the beach towns over there where they get 80,000 people a year.

"They said this is the perfect spot to do a similar thing."

The fun is far from over however, with the cars just now returning to the BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort from a cruise to Shute Harbour.

Mr Coyte said they would be kicking off rocker cover races from 3pm.

"Basically all they are is a rocker cover off an engine with a set of skateboard wheels," he said.

"We've got a ramp and they go down under gravity power."

From there it's time to bust a move on the dance floor, with a rock'n'roll dance from 7pm.

Mr Coyte said the accompanying dinner was sold out, and dance tickets would sell quickly.

Anyone interested in joining the Whitsunday Cruisin' Car Club is welcome to do so, Mr Coyte said.

"It doesn't matter whether its show quality or just an everyday driver; if it's their pride and joy we're happy to have them," he said.
