Crush to finally start tomorrow, Wilmar says
PROSERPINE'S 2017 cane crush is due to begin tomorrow.
This is the third date that has now been set for the beginning of the sugar cane crush at Wilmar's Proserpine mill.
Wet weather set back the original crush date of June 14 and a second significant rainfall event further delayed the crush that was rescheduled for June 20.
Strathdickie cane grower Gary Simpson said it would be a relief to see the mill begin operation but he was also concerned about the 30% chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday increasing to 50% on Monday.
"It has been a bit frustrating it has been a wet start. But as far as I know the harvesters will start today and will stockpile some cane until they have enough and will fire up the mill on Friday," he said.
Mr Simpson said he was used to wet starts and the three-week delay of the crush was not of huge significance.
The raw sugar price this morning was 21.06 cents per pound this is an increase from yesterday's price of 19.08.
