Cup gives locals once in a lifetime opportunity

LISA Schuring made a promise to her mother that she would do something once in a lifetime- have her photo taken holding the Melbourne Cup.

Ms Schuring had her chance to do just that at the Hotel Metropole this afternoon where local part-owner Joe Dalton put the cup on show.

"I watch (the cup) every year and it's so awesome to have it here in town," Ms Schuring said.

"My mum is ill and she really wanted me to get a photo with the cup while it was here so that's what I'm doing."

A few months ago, Prince of Penzance won first place at the Melbourne Cup and today, Mr Dalton brought the cup to the Metropole for locals to share in the excitement.

Yesterday, the cup was featured at the Reef Gateway Hotel.

Manager of the Metropole, Laurie Goldman said it was incredible to have such a huge part of the nation's history in the hotel.

"I think it's terrific and everyone's really excited to have it here," he said.

"It's once in a lifetime opportunity and it probably won't be here again."

The cup will be in the region for another week before it heads to Mackay on Saturday.
