Dam fishing sure to fire up on full moon

ISLANDS

Some nice coral trout have been landed, with the best time being the last hour or so of the run-out tide.

A few tuna schools are starting to show up, along with mackerel.

Double Cone Island has been fishing quite well, along with Roseric Shoal and Mackerel Bay, jigging metal blades into the bait schools.

With the good tides and the weather permitting, try the deeper holes such as around Pinnacle Point and the shoals for your red emperor and nannygai.

There haven't been many anglers in Shute Harbour due to the wind this week, but once this drops off the queenfish should be promising on live herring.

The odd mackerel has also been taken this week in Shute Harbour.

ROCK WALLS

A couple of fingermark have been caught off the Whitsunday Sailing Club rock walls, with the odd queenfish also being landed.

RIVER

This weekend will have some great tides for fishing the river.

Try targeting barramundi and threadfin on live bait up the river in the deeper holes where the feeder creeks break into the main Proserpine River.

Trolling big, long structured bends using 3-5m divers should also produce some fish.

There have been reports of some crabs around.

DAM

The dam has been quite tough fishing lately with these windy conditions.

However, building up to this September full moon the dam should really start to fire.

Try targeting these fish on the windblown points and weed beds using soft plastics, shallow diving hard bodies and surface lures during the evening and into the night.

Also, the odd barramundi is being trolled up through the deep timber using 3-5m divers.

REEF

The past week has had some great fishing at the reef, although it's been a little windy, which is making it challenging.

Some excellent fish have been taken both on the bottom and the surface pelagics.

Giant trevally up to 40kg have been reported, along with spanish mackerel up to 20kg.

There's not a lot to report over the deeper shoals as the big tides proved hard to target the reds, but the shallows were productive for mixed reef fish.
