Dancers to put on spectacular show

ONE of the Whitsundays' largest dance productions will hit the stage at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre this coming weekend.

Featuring special effects and lighting worth over $250,000 and costumes valued at more than $30,000, the Dee Jays School of Dance 35th Stage Spectacular is guaranteed to be an amazing show.

Dee Jay's School of Dance principal Denise Hadley described the two-hour extravaganza as a proper production with real showmanship involved.

"It's theatre - it's not just little kids in tutus running around and grandma thinks they're beautiful," she said.

Ms Hadley, who has been bringing the Stage Spectacular to Proserpine for 35 years, was inspired to create a show that would keep all audience members entertained.

"[And] if there's not something in there that doesn't make you go 'that's wonderful', I will give you your money back," she said.

About 160 dancers from Ms Hadley's Proserpine and Bowen studios will perform in the show, as well as a parents group, consisting of 12 mothers and one father, who will dance a mock version of Swan Lake, titled 'Duck Swamp'.

"It's the funniest thing you've ever seen," Ms Hadley said.

"There's a lot of comedy [in the show] and we do excerpts from musicals as well, so there's singing and speech and it's funny - it's not just a dance show."

The 35th Stage Spectacular starts with a laser light show ahead of an opening number by the senior jazz group. There's an outdoor adventure piece, featuring local twists such as fish caught at the Proserpine dam, plus excerpts from the musicals Matilda and Grease, which also turned 35 this year.

Ms Hadley encouraged as many people as possible to come out and see the show.

"I think if they don't, they will miss one of the best things that's been held in that centre ever," she said.

"And it's local - these are local kids who have worked really hard to put this together and it's as good as anything you will see anywhere."

Show times are 7pm on Friday and 10.30am and 6.30pm on Saturday. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $16 for concessions and under 16's.
