GAME of Throne fans are in mourning for a much-loved character.
The betrayal of Jon Snow was a twist many of us, who haven't read the books, didn't see coming.
A small band of his Night's Watch "brothers", including his squire Olly, stab Snow repeatedly in the stomach, claiming it is "for The Watch".
While the episode ended with the young leader bleeding out on the snow, his death was not shown but it seems unlikely even he could come back from such injury.
Winter is coming, but oh how can we survive it without Jon Snow?
Those who have read George RR Martin's books would have been expecting Snow's betrayal, apparently orchestrated by the treacherous Boltons.
But this may not be the true end of Snow, as Martin has cast doubt on his death in previous interviews about the novels.
The reaction from fans was swift on social media, with the show quickly becoming a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.
Like Ned Stark's death in season one and the "Red Wedding" of season three, many viewers were quick to post their reactions.
His apparent demise left little time for celebration of one of the most highly anticipated scenes of the season.
Lena Headey was excellent in Queen Cersei's walk of atonement, which featured the royal walking naked through the streets of King's Landing while the public hurled abuse at her.
Images from the set were leaked when the dramatic scene was filmed in Dubrovnik last year.
Her confession won't be the end of her suffering though, with the High Sparrow insisting she must still stand trial for the crimes she denied committing, namely having children with her brother Jamie.
Jamie too was having a bad time. Despite parting with the Martells amicably, it was soon revealed that Ellaria's strange goodbye kiss to his daughter Myrcella was laced with poison.
Daenerys's two love-struck warriors Jorah and Daario set out in search of her after she fled the Fighting Pits on her dragon Drogon.
They leave Tyrion, a recovering Grey Worm and Missandei in charge of running Meereen in their absence.
But the Mother of Dragons appears to have come full circle, encountering a large troupe of horse-mounted Dothraki in the hills where she has been hiding out with Drogon.
Tyrion is also reunited with his ally Lord Varys, who smartly points out there is no one better to try to keep the peace in "a grand old city choking on violence, corruption and deceit".
Fans now have a long wait ahead of them to find out if Jon Snow is truly dead. Season six of the popular fantasy series will not air until April next year.
The season five finale of Game of Thrones will be replayed on Foxtel's Showcase channel at 7.30pm tonight.
