David is ready for Rio
WHITSUNDAY Regional Council got behind duel Paralympic cyclist David Nicholas OAM last week.
Nicholas, a council employee, was the guest of honour at a special morning tea to farewell the Paralympic hopeful.
Mayor Andrew Willcox said on behalf of the staff and councillors, he wished Nicholas the best of luck when competing in Rio de Janeiro next month.
"I'm sure David knows how proud we are of his achievements and to be a member of the Australian Cycling Team for a second time is an absolutely incredible achievement in itself," he said.
"David puts in many hours of training and I'm sure he knows how proud his friends and colleagues are of him; he's really doing the Whitsunday region proud."
Nicholas has said he is very honoured to be able to once again represent his country at the Paralympics and is appreciative of the support received so far.
"I would like to thank my work mates, everyone on social media and the community for their support over the last couple of weeks, it has been great," he said. Nicholas' event schedule at the 2016 Rio Paralympics includes races on the track and two road racing events. On the track on September 9, Nicholas will contest the 3km individual pursuit and on September 10 he will ride for glory in the 1km time trail. On September 14, Nicholas will put rubber to the bitumen in the 30km time trial and will ride in the 70km road race on September 16.
Nicholas will fly to Sydney on Thursday to meet his cycling team before flying to Italy for a 2.5 week pre-staging camp ahead of the Rio Paralympics which commence on September 7.
Justin Knight Gray, a peer from the Whitsunday Triathlon Club, said Nicholas was an "inspiration" as an athlete and a human being.
Nicholas said he was excited about the Paralympics and doing the best he could at the games next month.
