Detective treated unfairly, union says

THE police union says a Bundaberg detective who was stood down from duty for allegedly leaking confidential information and accepting gifts is being treated unfairly.

Detective Senior Sergeant Joseph Hildred was stood down from duty last month after being accused of inappropriately releasing confidential information, allowing police resources to be used inappropriately and receiving gifts and benefits.

Mr Hildred's legal representatives from the Queensland Police Union have not received any other details other than three dot points outlining the allegations, and union president Ian Leavers said this was unfair.

He said they had asked the police service, through the Commissioner, for reasons behind its decision to stand Mr Hildred down, but this was refused.

Mr Leavers was concerned this was a misuse of power.

He also said it was wrong that a person could be stood down or suspended from duty without being given sufficient reasons.

The Queensland Police Service did not wish to comment.

Mr Leavers said the union has asked for reasons in at least five current cases where Queensland officers have been stood down.

"Traditionally stand down and suspension action was kept for serious allegations that if proven would warrant consideration of terminating an officer's employment," Mr Leavers said.

The police service is applying to the court to ask a judge to determine that the service is not obligated to provide reasons why it stands down or suspends officers, court documents have shown.

It is unclear whether Mr Hildred will fight the claims made against him. Mr Leavers said they were still unclear of what exactly the allegations were.
