Do you know this pub at heart of Russian hacking mystery?

Chris Hobbs reported that Russians were spying on a CQ watering hole and, twenty minutes later, the police arrived at his door, lights flashing and sirens screaming.

"For a split second, I was a little bit worried," he said.

"I thought I might have got myself in trouble."

It turned out the police visit was coincidental - they were allegedly searching backyards for an assailant late last night.

Mr Hobbs had seen a story on TV about a Russian website hacking unsecured cameras around the world and went online to take a look.

Of the 40 cameras around Australia, one of them was listed as in Yeppoon, so Mr Hobbs started messaging CQ pubs to warn them.

"I messaged the Sailing Club and the Strand Hotel," he said.

"Then I contacted the Capricorn Tavern and, moments later, the camera went offline."

The actual location of the pub remains a mystery, though, a Yeppoon publican, familiar with local premises, said she doesn't recognise it.

As the site says the map is only accurate to within 100km, the camera could be anywhere in Central Queensland.

The screen grab shows a semi-circular bar with a distinctive buffet table to one side.

Mr Hobbs said whichever venue it was probably changed their camera's setting to password-protected.

The website, which featured live streams from backyard swimming pools in Perth to an outdoor dining area in Melbourne, allows people to control the cameras by zooming and rotating in some instances.

Australian authorities are warning such websites could be used to launch criminal attacks.

More to come.
