Donations are needed for fireworks display

THE Whitsunday Reef Festival committee is seeking financial donations to ensure dual New Year's Eve fireworks displays at Airlie Beach can go ahead.

Reef Festival chairwoman Margie Murphy said fireworks typically cost around $1000 per minute.

"So to get the dual displays at 9pm and midnight we really need $15,000," she said.

Ms Murphy said in past years, financial contributions had been made by individuals, small and large businesses and organisations such as Whitsunday Regional Council and Whitsundays Marketing and Development Limited (WMDL).

"And we really want the accommodation providers to get behind us this year as one of the reasons we do this is to entertain our visitors to town," she said.

"It would be disappointing for visitors and locals not to have fireworks on New Year's Eve but it really will take the help of the whole town to get behind this and make it happen."

Ms Murphy said there had never been a major 'naming rights' sponsor for the fireworks before.

"But we would love to take one if someone would like to come forward," she said.

Fireworks donations are tax deductible and can be made by contacting secretary@whitsundayreeffestival.com.au.

The Whitsunday Reef Festival aims to put on two sets of fireworks on New Year's Eve - one at 9pm for families and the other at midnight to ring in 2015.
