Roll on up for PCYC hockey

THE wind will whistle in your ears and blow through your hair as you roll around at Whitsunday PCYC's latest program.

Every Thursday from 6-8.30pm, Whitsunday PCYC will hold inline skating for kids aged six and above.

And it doesn't matter the skill level and it doesn't matter if you've never played before, Peter and Danielle McAlpine are there to help.

Peter will teach the fundamentals of roller skating and blading such as how to stand, fall safely, skate forward and backward, turn corners and stop.

For those who want to learn the basics of inline hockey, Peter will teach puck and ball skills and how to use a hockey stick and pass to team mates.

"A lot of people don't understand you need to be able to work as a team in this sport and it doesn't matter if you're introverted or extroverted, you get a lot out of it," Peter said.

"You get to improve your skills together and it's quite a talent to be able to play.

"It's something that could help out the community and give back."

Having played hockey for 25 years, Peter is not short of experience and loves having the chance to pass on his knowledge.

"I found over my time that it's good fun for the kids while they're in a safe environment," he said.

"It gives them a chance to meet new friends, build the skills and abilities they already have or wish to develop on."
