Drink driver gets jail for four times limit

AN EXTENSIVE history of drink driving saw Nathan Andrew Greene handed a six month prison sentence in Proserpine Magistrate's Court on Monday for driving at more than four times the legal alcohol limit.

While he was immediately released on parole, Magistrate Simon Young issued a final warning to the 46-year-old.

"If you continue this behaviour you will find yourself in prison again sooner rather than later," he said.

The court heard that around 4.16pm on August 1 on Shute Harbour Rd, Cannonvale, Greene was pulled over by police at the Whitsunday Shopping Centre and blew 0.226.

Police prosecutor Acting Senior Constable Tyler Roberts said police had observed Greene to have "bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a smell of alcohol".

He told police he had drunk around five or six schooners of XXXX Gold that day. It got worse as Constable Roberts told the court of Greene's "significant history of drink driving" with "most of them high-range offences".

While admitting that "he had a big night the night before," duty lawyer Cleo Rewald said Greene had indicated alcohol had been a problem for him.

Mr Young was not impressed after hearing of Greene's extensive history.

"If he's chosen not to take any steps to address it (alcohol addiction) then that's his choice," he said.

"I drive on that road, you, Ms Rewald drive on that road, my family drive on that road; to have someone driving at 0.226 concerns me greatly."

In handing down his sentence, Mr Young said he was very close to jail time.

"The early plea of guilty is the primary reason you are walking out the same door you came in," he said.

"This type of behaviour is a danger, it's a disgrace, it cannot be repeated."

Greene was sentenced to six months imprisonment with immediate parole and was disqualified from driving for two years.
