Driver fined $1000 for causing Stockroute Rd crash

A 33-YEAR-OLD man has been fined after he drove through a stop sign at a high speed and crashed into a ute.

Cannonvale man Tyler John Pethers pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention in Mackay Magistrates Court this morning.

Prosecutor Sheena Hayes said Pethers had been driving south along Cowleys Rd on July 6 when he came to an intersection at Stockroute Rd.

Witnesses said Pethers drove past a stop sign without slowing and his Nissan Navara ute crashed into a Ford Ranger ute.

Ms Hayes said witnesses had said Pethers had been driving at about 95-100kmh, while he told police he believed he'd been driving about 80kmh but couldn't be sure.

Pethers told police the crash had been his fault. His passenger was taken to Mackay Base Hospital with injuries, while he was taken for observation.

The driver of the Ford Ranger did not require medical treatment.

Defence solicitor Catherine Luck said Pethers worked in roads construction and maintenance and at the time had been returning from various worksites at Moranbah and Nebo.

She said Pethers, who was unfamiliar with the road, was distracted by a nearby train and discussions with his passenger at the time and he "simply didn't see" the stop sign.

Ms Luck said that as Pethers travelled extensively for work his driver's licence was crucial so the father of two could keep his job.

In the past week he'd driven 1000km alone, she said.

Magistrate Nerida Wilson agreed that a fine was sufficient punishment.

She said Pethers had a "solid driving history" apart from a drink-driving charge in 2008 and speeding fines.

Pethers was fined $1000 and a conviction was recorded on his traffic history.
