Drivers ignore warnings about flooded roads

RAIN which fell on Toowoomba and surrounds at the weekend was welcomed by most people, even if it caused some cancellations of sporting fixtures and made driving around town a little tricky.

Unfortunately, despite repeated police warnings of "If it's flooded, forget it", a number of motorists were seen driving through flooded streets during the downpour.

Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said officers were urging extra vigilance in wet weather.

"We have said it before, but it is really vital not to ignore road closure signs," the former St Mary's College Toowoomba student said.

"Regardless of what vehicle you are driving, if the road is flooded, or signed as being flooded, don't take the risk.

"Not only is it extremely dangerous, but you can receive an on-the-spot fine of $683 or even face criminal charges for dangerous operation of a motor vehicle as well as running the risk of voiding insurance policies.

"It's bad enough putting yourself at risk, but you're also endangering the lives of your passengers as well as police and other emergency services who respond."

Toowoomba Airport between 9am and 4pm yesterday had recorded just over 33mm of rain.

Today we can expect "a shower or two in the morning" before clearing in the afternoon, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
