Duo sets eyes on new WWII project

IT'S taken two years of hard work and dedication to put together a tribute to the Proserpine district men who served in the First World War and Boer War, but those behind the book aren't resting on their laurels.

Already they're hoping veterans of the Second World War and their families will come forward for inclusion in their next challenge - a proposed book to document the history of the men who joined up for the 1939-1945 conflict.

Public presentations of the recently completed book, Proserpine Answered the Call, were held at Cannonvale and Proserpine libraries last week.

A Proserpine Historical Museum Society project, it was compiled by Lyn Burke and Lloyd Fox, with help from Year 9 students at Proserpine State High School and St Catherine's College.

Officially launched on April 24, the book details the lives of the region's World War One soldiers, including Italian servicemen, who had been largely forgotten.

Mr Fox said compiling the proposed Second World War project would be a lot more complicated.

"In Proserpine Answered the Call, we ended up with 166 men who have a connection to the area.

"Just having a quick look at what's required for the Second World War book, we have come up with 587 names ... and there will be more."

Accessing official records wouldn't be as easy as it had been for the First World War project, Mr Fox said, so the only way to find out about the stories of those who fought would be to interview the men involved, or to talk to their families.

"It gives us a better chance of learning more first-hand information."

Mr Fox expects some interesting information to emerge when the Second World War stories are told.

Funded by the Federal Government Anzac Centenary Local Grant Project, the book costs $25, plus postage. It is available from the Proserpine Historical Museum (4945 3969) and is in public libraries.

If you would like a family member who served in the Second World War to be included in the new project, contact Lyn Burke on 4947 2647 or Lloyd Fox on 4947 0101.
