Earthquake prediction for Qld

QUEENSLAND will experience a potentially destructive earthquake in the near future, but it will be completely unrelated to recent incidents in Australia, one of the state's leading seismologists says.

The largest earthquake in Western Australia's history on Monday caused buildings to collapse and a gold mine to be shut down, while Adelaide was rocked by a tremor registering about 4 on the richter scale late on Friday night.

Central Queensland Seismology Research Group leader Mike Turnbull has warned significant seismic activity was predicted for Queensland in coming years.

"About every 130-year period we can expect to have at least one magnitude 6 earthquake somewhere in central Queensland," Mr Turnbull said.

"The last one of that type was around about 1935 [when there was a] magnitude 6 earthquake 10 kilometres north of Gayndah.  And in 1918, out near Lady Elliott Island there was a magnitude 6.2 earthquake.  So, yes we can have quite large and potentially damaging earthquakes in central Queensland."
