Election promises made
PROSERPINE voters got their election promises straight from the horse's mouths last night when candidates for Division 3 outlined their hopes for the region.
Incumbent councillor John Collins pointed to his track record, saying he promised four years ago to run his campaign on "honesty, integrity and common sense".
"Also, I said that I was going to make better decisions than the previous council had been delivering," he said.
"I can honestly say here and now that I have delivered."
Candidate Rogin Taylor promised to be "a full-time councillor", also making mention of the proposed councillor pay rise that has now been denied.
"I might be critical but if councillors or candidates are just there for the money, they shouldn't be there," he said.
Mr Collins said he had committed himself "100%" to his position, also touching on spending.
"I have never once made a claim on using my own vehicle," he said.
"Many times I have driven to Bowen night and day to attend meetings. I look upon this as part of my job."
Talk then turned to what constituents could expect from their candidates should they be elected.
Mr Taylor responded to Mr Collins' promise of harbouring no hidden or personal agenda.
"Do I have a personal agenda?" Mr Taylor asked
"You bet I do. My personal agenda is to make sure your ratepayer dollars are spent wisely and that tenders are run honestly and all businesses are given the opportunity to quote on council purchases."
Mr Taylor added he would ensure staff vacancies were advertised locally, ensure school leavers and the unemployed had the chance to apply for council jobs, and would ensure the council shopped locally.
"By shopping locally and supporting each other, we can rebuild confidence in our town and our region, but we need to support each other like never before," he said.
Mr Collins said great progress had been made in his current term with the proposed Proserpine water park and an RV-friendly stop, promising more was to come if he was elected.
"I will continue to fight for both projects to be completed on time and within budget," he said.
"My priorities for the next council term include the continued upgrading of Main St and Faust St, identifying what community and tourism opportunities there are for Peter Faust Dam, and to continue working with the Chamber of Commerce to help them with their initiatives to help boost businesses in Proserpine."
Mr Collins also resolved to help Wilsons and Conway Beach locals with their concerns.
Both men reaffirmed their promises to be there for the constituents of Division 3.
"As your local councillor, I will continue to be there for the people, listen to the community and deliver strong results for Division 3," Mr Collins said.
Mr Taylor was similarly adamant.
"As my flier states, anyone can listen - it's acting on what you hear that makes a difference," he said.
