Ellen joins endeavour crew
ELLEN Johnson isn't one to shy away from adventure and she's about to embark on a challenging once-in-a-lifetime experience.
At 23 years old, the Airlie Beach local will board the STS Young Endeavour along with 23 other youths when it departs Abell Point Marina tomorrow at 4pm.
Originally from Cairns, Ellen said it was her boyfriend who introduced her to sailing and the STS Young Endeavour voyage program.
"I went on the website and looked at it and saw there was a voyage coming through here to Cairns," she said.
"I thought it would be a good opportunity to expand my sailing skill set."
Ellen and other youths from all around Australia will sail from Airlie Beach to Cairns over an 11-13 day voyage.
The crew spend the first seven days on board being trained on how to sail the square rigged ship before they are put in charge on day eight.
Ellen only started sailing when she moved to the Whitsundays just over a year ago and landed a job on an overnight boat called Blizzard.
"We do sailing trips and we go out to all the islands and do snorkelling and stuff like that which is nice," she said.
While on the STS Young Endeavour, Ellen said she had her own personal goals she wished to achieve.
"I want to improve my navigation skills and stuff like that," she said.
"I know the theory but I haven't really had the chance to put it into action."
When asked what she was most excited about, she didn't hesitate to answer.
"Climbing the rigging- that's exciting," she said.
