Ergon responds to MP’s outrage
THE Whitsundays has long been notorious for power outages when foul weather sets in, with around 1600 homes affected in last Friday's storm alone.
Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan has been quick to take to social media to express his anger at this most recent disruption to power, saying it was becoming "more and more common".
"In a first world economy that is unacceptable," he wrote, adding "I'll be asking for a "please explain" from the Minister responsible and for now have relayed my thoughts to Ergon's most senior executive for Mackay and the Whitsundays who says this latest drama was caused by a cable fault".
Mr Costigan finished his post by encouraging constituents to "email my office with their own stories in relation to the loss of supply".
An Ergon Energy spokesperson has responded to the Whitsunday MP's comments by saying no electricity network was infallible.
"Ergon Energy has a robust network in the Airlie Beach and Jubilee Pocket areas, however like all power networks it is subject to occasional faults over time, many of them as a result of external influences such as storms and vegetation, animal or machinery impacts," the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson also said the specific cause of last Friday's outages was still unknown "and could have been contributed to by a variety of circumstances".
"This type of event on this asset is rare and Ergon doesn't envisage any ongoing issues of this nature to affect customers in these areas," they said.
