Concerns about Scott Elms referred to Police Commissioner

QUEENSLAND Premier Campbell Newman has referred concerns about Scott Elms to the Police Commissioner after the Rainbow Beach businessman and Independent candidate for Gympie launched a website-based attack on Member for Gympie David Gibson.

Mr Elms released ACT court documents on Tuesday revealing Mr Gibson was caught stealing more than $7000 from the Australian Army in 1999.

Yesterday, Mr Gibson quit his post as chairman of the Select Committee on Ethics.

Mr Newman said he was made aware, on April 2 this year, of a statement made to the media which contained a number of claims regarding the Member for Gympie.

"I immediately referred those claims to the Clerk of the Parliament for his advice," Mr Newman said in a statement.

"Late yesterday (Tuesday) I received the Clerk's response.

"In the Clerk's view the material did not provide sufficient evidence to create any suspicion of misconduct by Mr Gibson.

"Further, the material did not raise any issues that would have disqualified Mr Gibson from being a candidate, or serving as a Member of Parliament.

"However, the Clerk did raise concerns that the claims may have been an attempt to intimidate, or indeed blackmail, Mr Gibson.

"I have referred those concerns to the Speaker, and to the Police Commissioner.

"Mr Gibson has (yesterday afternoon) resigned his position on the Select Committee on Ethics to ensure the committee can complete its work without distraction.

"The Member for Lockyer, Mr Ian Rickuss, will be nominated to replace Mr Gibson as chairman of that committee."
