Excellent efforts in hurdles
ATHLETICS: With the taste of bacon and eggs still fresh in their mouths, mothers and fathers alike were holding their breath as their young athletes ran across the hurdles for the first time this year.
It was a great effort by the runners over the 60, 80 and 100m courses, with those who had made it to training earlier in the week putting their new skills into practice.
There were several tumbles as the morning progressed, as is the nature of the event, but each athlete rose, undaunted, to continue the race, making it to the end, heads held high, doing their mothers proud.
In other events, the nine to 11-year-old group will be sending the club to check the record books this week, after several athletes put in an excellent effort in shot put, with Lily Sainsbury, Grace Franke and Cohen Dittman being the standouts.
The older group threw their first javelins of the year.
There were some fantastic throws by a number of athletes, though it was hard to go past Howard McDonald.
He told the coach before the season got started that javelin was his thing and a massive throw of 46.01m shows it was no exaggeration. It will be exciting to see how far the javelin will fly as the season progresses.
The IAAF Kids' As group had a long jump focus both in their rotations and after.
Continuing from what they had been doing at training, they first competed in a landing competition designed to teach them to land safely as well as jumping far.
Putting this into practice in the pit afterwards allowed them to demonstrate how these skills are readily transferred from the team and play-based Kids As events, to traditional athletics.
New members are always welcome. Club days start at 9am on the PSHS oval.
