Family affair for our Airlie Beach Triathlon

TRIATHLON: Exercise is a habit in the Dale household and this year's Colorbond Triathlon is another opportunity for the family to get active and have some fun.

Mother Dora, normally a participant herself, will be trackside as a proud parent while children Daniel, 9, and Alison, 7, compete and then as one of the volunteers.

A member of the Whitsunday Triathlon Club, Dale has made the transition from a running background over the past couple of years, with her most recent highlight a finish in the recent Cairns 70.3 event. Dale has enjoyed the challenge of learning to swim and just last weekend took advantage of the bike skills clinics conducted by Cory Cycles.

"I've definitely been tested both physically and mentally a few times since taking up the sport, but I'm enjoying the camaraderie of the group and learning new things," she said.

Both of her children will be competing in the Ergon Kidzpower Triathlon, which has distances for kids of all abilities and ages as well as team options. As students of Whitsunday Christian College, they'll also be accruing points for their school in the battle for the McDonald's Triathlon Championship.

While the kids will be competing on the Saturday afternoon, the main event follows on Sunday morning and Dale is sacrificing her racing to be part of the Hog's Helpers.

More than 30 volunteers are required to keep competitors on track and safe throughout the event and Dale will be doing her bit to ensure they all have an enjoyable experience.

"I'm really looking forward to being on the other side of the event and hopefully adding some much needed energy out there on course," Dale said.

If you are interested in volunteering contact Steve Jackson on 0408 236 483.

Registration shows a large number of siblings taking on the Kidzpower event, while other families will have competitors in both the senior and junior events.

With entries still open online for just over another week, it's not too late to take heed of these active families and get involved as well.
