Family fight leads to stabbing death of fiance

THE knife she had armed herself with was not meant for her fiance.

But when Nicola Maria Baillie was lashing out at her daughter's boyfriend, she severed an artery in Darrin Gay's leg.

It was an injury that quickly led to his death after he was taken from a Bribie Island unit to the Royal Brisbane Hospital on that fateful day in April, 2012.

Bailliee - who originally lived in Hervey Bay when she moved from New Zealand and has lived on the Sunshine and Gold coasts - pleaded guilty on Tuesday to manslaughter.

The 48-year-old was sentenced to eight years jail for the family dispute gone wrong but could be out in time to spend Christmas with her family if she can convince parole authorities to free her.

Baillie also pleaded guilty to wounding Nathan Evans, her daughter's boyfriend, who ended up with knife wounds - one after a knife was thrown at his back - during the struggles in the holiday unit.

Crown prosecutor Belinda Merrin told Brisbane Supreme Court on Tuesday that Baillie, her daughter and both victims were drunk and on prescription drugs when the altercation broke out.

Defence barrister Greg McGuire said his client's daughter and boyfriend, Mr Evans, had been asked to leave the Hervey Bay home they were living in which was how they ended up on Baillie's doorstep.

He said the daughter had a violent relationship, which had resulted in her being hospitalised multiple times.

Mr McGuire said Baillie grew up with domestic violence and her decision to grab the knife was about protection.

Justice David Boddice said he accepted Baillie did not intend to kill her fiance.

"I accept the incident arose in circumstances where, as a result of past violent relationships, you responded in a way which was unfortunate and inappropriate by introducing that knife," he said.

Baillie becomes eligible for parole on December 1 this year after she has served two years and eight months behind bars.
