Fishing competition will hit Abell Point Marina

THE Whitsundays will witness the ultimate battle of fishing supremacy this weekend with a friendly challenge between the Whitsunday Game Fish Club, the Abell Point Yacht Club and members of the public.

The Whitsunday Inter-Club Mackerel Muster will be on July 30-31 with prizes across multiple categories including adult male and female, junior male and female aged 8-14, small fry male and female up to eight years.

Prizes will be awarded for the heaviest mackerel in each category, the longest coral trout and the longest large mouth nannygai for adults and juniors and the longest stripey bass and sweetlip for small fry only.

The simple rules are that the fish adhere to Queensland size and bag limits, that fisherman use rod and reel only and fish must be caught within a 40 nautical mile radius of Abell Point Marina.

Official weigh-ins will be at Abell Point Marina on Saturday from 5-6pm and again on Sunday from 3-4pm.

All fish must be in good condition to be eligible. This will be followed by a presentation.

Whitsunday Game Fish Club vice-president Ashley Moore said it would be a great weekend.

"Everybody is welcome to come along, have a burger and chat to the competitors," Moore said.

"Good numbers of Spanish mackerel have currently shown up around the islands and the weekend should see some good catches, so lock the dates in and join in for a great weekend."

A compulsory briefing and registration for the competition will be held at the Game Fish Club at 7pm Friday, July 29.

Food will be prepared by Fish D'vine at Sunday's weigh-in and proceeds from the weekend will be donated to Whitsunday Blue Care.
